About him

Henry VIII was born at Greenwich on 28 June 1491, the second son of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York. He became heir to the throne on the death of his elder brother, Prince Arthur, in 1502 and succeeded in 1509

Early life

In his young life he was athletic and very intelligent.  He spoke good French, Latin and Spanish he was very religious heard three masses daily when he hunted … He very liked Hunting, he had 8 or 10 horses. He also liked playing  tennis.He played lots of instruments. Some say that the song ‘GreenSleevs’ was composed by Henry.

Henry as king

Henry’s older brother Arthur died in 1502, So Henry was next in line to take the throne. Henry’s mother died in 1503, when Henry’s father died in 1509, Henry became king. He was crowned King Henry VIII [the 8th king of England called “Henry”]

Birth of prince

Only a few days after Anne’s execution in 1536, Henry married Jane Seymour.  The King was granted the power to further determine the line of succession in his will. Jane gave birth to a son, called Eduard VI in 1537, and died two weeks after. After Jane’s death, the entire court mourned with Henry for some time. Henry also considered her to be his only “true” wife; being the only one who had given him the male heir he so desperately sought.

Final years

In 1540, the aging King married the teenage Catherine Howard. Their marriage was short lived. It was alleged that she had a previous relationship with Henry’s courtier Francis Dereham and an affair with another courtier Thomas Culpeper. Catherine was executed for adultery and treason in 1542.

Henry’s final marriage to Catherine Parr, who acted like a nurse, was more harmonious and she would go on to outlive him.

Henry VIII died on 28 January 1547 and was succeeded by his son, Edward VI. He was buried next to Jane Seymour in St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle.
